Trip report 5-5 to 5-11

Ya know your in KW when you have chicken s--t on the bottoms of your Kinos! What a place! We stayed at the Southernmost on the Beach hotel and loved it. Right on the ocean with a wonderful tanning pier that we used every day. The rooms were large, clean, and quiet at night. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The hotel is quite a distance from all the activities on northern Duval St., but for people who don%26#39;t mind walking, like us, it is not bad. You can rent a bike or scooter if walking is not your bag.

As stated, arrived on 5-5 late in the day and went to dinner at Duffy%26#39;s. Very nice place with good shrimp. Walked down Duval, but we were pretty tired after the long day of traveling, so went back to hotel, took a dip in the pool and went to bed.

Went to Duval Beach Club for breakfast the next morning and it was ok, nothing special. As far as breakfast goes, we ate it every morning and only went to one place twice, Blue Heaven. You have to understand, my wife hates chickens!! She told me before we went that she would not go to a place to eat with chickens running around. I told her that Blue Heaven had the top rated breakfast in KW and convinced her to go. She loved it!! She said that it was the best breakfast she had ever eaten. She even played with the baby chicks while we ate. The only thing that disturbed her was a rooster that flew down near our table on the second visit. The atmosphere is ';rustic';, but the food is to die for. Had a cheese, shrimp and tomatoe omlette that was great. They make a real good bloody mary too. Other breakfasts included- Banana Cafe and Ernest Cafe, ok but Blue Heaven wins hands down!!

Can%26#39;t comment on lunch, didn%26#39;t eat any, but here is a list of places where we ate dinner:

Duffy%26#39;s as previously stated, twice.

Mangoes on Duval, sat at bar on the stools near the street, great people watching, better food!

Chonch Republic, harbor area, had some good peal and eat ';pinks'; and steamed clams.

Turtle Kraalls, had a late night meal after sunset cruise on Appledore. More on that later!

Abondonza%26#39;s on Simonton St., very good veal parm and the wife had grupper, excellent.

Cheeseburger and Hogs Breath Beer at Hogs Breath. Had to do that!

We had drinks at the usual watering holes, Sloppy Joe%26#39;s, Hogs Breath, Schooner Wharf Bar, Rum Barrel and did the museum, not for kids, but it did have some pretty good stuff! Bought an Eagles logo tee shirt with a pirates patch over the eye, cool!

As I said at the beginning, my wife and I bought Kinos and love them. I do not wear sandals, but I wear these. Very comfortable and very reasonable. I got a little help finding the store from a friend of ours, Seabus. We took the Old Town Trolley Tour and I remembered a previous post on this site from Keywestaxi that said if you see a trolley with the name Tim up front, say hi to Seabus. We got on the trolley and when I looked up front, there hung the Tim sign. I said to my wife, that is Seabus I know it! When we got to Mallory Square we exited the trolley and I asked the driver if he was in fact Seabus and he stated that he was. We talked for a few minutes and he invited me to the Schooner Whart on Friday for a get together and drinks. Unfortunately we were leaving on Friday and could not make it, bummer!! Bad planning on my part!! We only talked for a few minutes, but what a nice guy! If you take the trolley tour and are lucky enough to be on Tim%26#39;s, say hi, he made me promise to write this report. So here it is!!

The Appledore Sunset Cruise! Nice people on board, good crew, but advertised beer, wine, champagne, cheese and fruit. Well, my wife has a very restricted diet and we skipped dinner that night and shared that cheeseburger at Hogs Breath. She loves cheese and fruit and she figured on filling up with it on the cruise. Not a good call!! When they put out the plate of cheese and fruit, and I emphasize ';the'; plate, it was gone in about 2 minutes and all she got was 2 small pieces of cheese, some grapes, and 2 pieces of pineapple. That was it!!! There must have been 40 people on the boat and only one tray of snacks. Well needless to say, my wife was not happy and of course when we got back to the dock, the guy who sold us our tickets was gone. So we had a late dinner at Turtle Kraals.

Just a few closing remarks on KW in general. Enjoy the atmospher. Walk the side streets, smell the flowers, visit the quirky shops, talk to the locals and most of all relax!!! Vacations are for unwinding and recharging your batteries. The bar scene is nice, but KW is so much more!! You don%26#39;t want to come home more tired than when you left and you can, if try to do the Duval Crawl every night. This place is the United States version of paradise. Take it all in and most of all enjoy!!!
