Alternative to St Augustine

Hi

We love St Augustine but have %26#39;done it%26#39; several times, does anyone know of another quaint historic town in Florida that is worth a visit?

Alternative to St Augustine

Cedar Key comes to mind. Key West is very nice with alot to see.

Alternative to St Augustine

I think gainesville is historic or Tallahassee .

Not far from St. Augustine, north on AIA, Amelia Island is wonderful and they have a little historic town called Fernandina, has some great restaurants, B%26amp;B%26#39;s and an awesome fort to visit (Ft. Clinch). In my opinion though, there is no where even close to St. Augustine, it is my favorite.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond, I know it will be very difficult to find somewhere to beat St Augustine but I am happy to explore.

Yuck to Gainesville and Tallahassee , not even cool places....... murat, have you even been to either place to recommend? Other suggestions are great and I agree. Have fun and let us know what you do.

No Mahoney i was only guessing about being historic and Mahoney keep your opinion about my posting to yourself instead of saying yuck. That%26#39;s not nice !!!!

Mehmet, This is a travel based ';DISCUSSION forum. Opinions on your posting are subject to discussion just as your ';guesses'; are discussion.

I say YUCK, also. Both Gainesville and Tallahassee are large towns, hardly tourist destinations which compare, even minimally, to St. Augustine. While they both have historical aspects, the cities, in general, are not comparable--not beachtowns, historical tourism districts, etc.

The original poster asked a serious question and I should think the responses should at least be well considered, based on experience and not ';guesswork';. However, since ';guesses'; are discussion, I guess, can we at least agree that if you are going to post an OPINION on the board, you should at least say that that opinion is based on a ';guess';. Otherwise, travelers may be misled here.

At any rate, Smiffy, England, you might want to consider:

--Captiva and Sanibel, two of our faves,(expect crowds this itme of year). PINE ISLAND is fabulous and laid back. Not touristy, but very affordable and you have the glitz nearby of Captiva and Sanibel. Check the forums here for lots of info.

--On the west coast, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin area

--St Pete area - an older district, nice art centers, nice beaches

--Fort Pierce, a very cool beach old town, nearby Jensen Beach and Hutchinson Isle

--I do like Key West but it has lost some of the reality for me....too many tourists now and too much hype. I like the less traveled road. You might check out Everglade City instead.

Google any of these and you are sure to spot more than a few sites.

Historic or not i believe every city in Florida has its own beauty . Wish i could able to travel and discover other cities in Florida . I ve been in Jacksonville not really historic but a beutiful city.

Hi Smiffy...... we visited Sanibel and captiva in 2005 .. enchanting.... is how I would describe it....must say tho our daughter who was 14 at the time didnt enjoy the experience -thought we had taken her to a retirement island.. she loves Marco island as we do - and again visiting this year..

However my husband and I would return to Sanibel providing we went with friend with similar interests....

murat, you would be more credible if you had traveled a bit around Florida, or anywhere, perhaps. Just a suggestion: How %26#39;bout sticking to what you know; answering about the beach here, wherein you are very informative.

To suggest just any old town you heard of and post for someone who is asking for ';another quaint historic town'; is not credible info. I am happy you think all cities are beautiful; but visit them first to recommend them, okay?
