Status of Ding Darling

As regular readers know, the algae problem extends well beyond the drift algae that hits the beach to other types that are affecting the sea grass beds in the bay. This is the breeding grounds for the chain of life for sea creatures and the birds that feed off of them. Read the attached article and concider adding your voice to those asking for enough funding to make a difference - and ondo the damage of the Lake O releases and stop future releases for damaging the fragile eco-system that makes the Gulf coast the special place it is, in particular the islands of Sanibel, Captiva, North Captiva, Cayo Costa, Estero [Ft Myers Beach], Useppa, Cabbage Key, Lover%26#39;s Key - the waterways and rivers that flow into the bay that are suffering from blue-green algae and many others that are being impacted by excess nutrients released from lake.

Thanks for the link.

Everyone who loves the islands should be contributing to any number of the organizations (such as www.purre.com) fighting to help solve the problems facing the waterways.

Status of Ding Darling

While on the subject of Ding Darling NWR, it%26#39;s not too soon to be thinking about Ding Darling Days.

This October event is a full week of special programs and celebrations of nature in the Refuge.

This year, the event also will host the judging of the 2007 Federal Duck Stamp competition.

Several accommodations providers will be offering special packages.

My recollection is that it will start Oct 8.

For more information, see http://www.dingdarlingdays.com

This is truly a world class event and it is not affected by beach algae.

With luck the blue-green algae problem will be mitigated by then.
